Despite foreign rule from the 13th to 20th centuries, the Latvian nation maintained its identity throughout the generations via the language and musical traditions. Latvia and Estonia share a long common history. As a consequence of the Soviet occupation, both countries are home to a large number of ethnic Russians (26.9% in Latvia and 25.5% in Estonia, some of whom are non-citizens. Latvia is historically predominantly Protestant Lutheran, except for the Latgale region in the southeast, which has historically been predominantly Roman Catholic.

Short Stay Visa To Enter Latvia:
- Passport with a period of validity extending at least three month after the intended date of departure from Latvia or other Member State, containing at least two blank pages, and issued within the previous ten years.
- Visa application form completed and signed by the applicant.
- 1 colour photo (35mmx45mm).
- Travel medical insurance policy valid for the whole Schengen area and covering the entire period of the intended visit in the Schengen area and including also "the period of grace" of 15 days.
If the applicant will travel to Latvia for more than two times, he must present a valid travel medical insurance policy covering the period of his first intended visit.

- Proof of available financial means in a form of traveller's Cheques or bank statements for the last 3 month proving that you have enough finances (not less than 13 GBP per day) both for the duration of the intended stay and for return to your country of origin or residence, if there is no indication in your invitation that your inviting party will cover your expenses.
- Document that proves ties to the state of residence – a letter from the employer or education institution OR
For tourists – round trip tickets,
- Hotel booking and proof of sufficient means to pay for accommodation,
- Proof of available finances in a form of traveller's cheques or bank statements for the last 3 month proving that you have enough finances (not less than 13 GBP per day) both for the duration of the intended stay and for return to your country of origin or residence.
- Document that proves ties to the state of residence – a letter from the employer or education institution.
